Virtual Wine Tasting Event
“Orange Wines” with J. Emerson, Inc.

Friday, May 14 | 6 pm

Women’s Wine Society is very pleased to bring you an opportunity to learn about, and sample, Orange Wines — from the comfort of your own home!

Jim Compton of J. Emerson, Inc. Fine Wines and Cheese shop has offered to provide the custom wine tasting kits and host the evening’s conversation about orange wines.

Below are some of the details about the event.  Feel free to include friends and family! You do not need to be a WWS member to participate.

We look forward to raising a glass with you once again! (even if it is just virtually)

Date/Time/Place

Friday, May 14th, 6:00-7:30(ish) p.m., participate online from the comfort of your own home.

Registered participants will receive a Zoom meeting link via email prior to the virtual event.

Just like our typical in-person events, we plan to “open the doors” at 6:00 p.m. and have some social time on Zoom before we kick-off the official tasting event around 6:30 p.m. This will also allow time for any technical difficulties to be addressed. (And because it’s our tradition to open our events with a little sparkle in our glass, we’ve even included the option of ordering a 187 mL split of sparkling wine with your kit!)

What are Orange Wines?

Orange wines are made with white grapes, but in a way typical for reds where the juice stays in contact with the skins after pressing, resulting in hues ranging from pale straw to golden to very dark orange—hence the name.

These wines have been described as robust and bold, with honeyed aromas of jackfruit (a fleshy tropical fruit), hazelnut, brazil nut, bruised apple, wood varnish, linseed oil, juniper, sourdough, and dried orange rind.

On the palate, they’re big, dry, and even have tannin like a red wine with a sourness similar to fruit beer.

How to get your wine tasting kit?

Wine tasting kits are available for pre-order and pick-up from J. Emerson, Inc. Fine Wines & Cheese shop near the intersection of Libbie & Grove Avenues.  Kits must be picked up BEFORE the event.  It is recommended that you pick them up on Thursday, May 13th or Friday, May 14th for maximum freshness.  The store is open 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

What’s a wine tasting kit?

Tasting kits include small, individual bottles of the wines that will be featured during the event. Each bottle typically contains between 1 – 4 oz of wine.  We will tasting 4 wines and our kits will have (4) 4 oz. portions of wine.

What wines will we be tasting?

We will be tasting 4 wines.

The ancestral home for the modern equivalent of orange wines is often considered to be Georgia (the country, not the state), so we will start with a wine from Georgia:
2018  Dilao, Rkatsiteli Mtsvane Amber Dry Kakheti, Georgia ($22.99/btl)
The modern rendition of these wines started in Colli Orientali del Friuli and Slovenia so we will have a version of those wines for our second sample:
2018 Stekar Malvazija ($28.99)
Then Jim will offer a more affordable skin contact wine:
2019 Cantina Marilina ‘Sikele’ Grecanico Terre Siciliane IGT Sicily, Italy ($18.99)
Lastly, we’ll try a new world version, in this case a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with  extended skin contact:
2020 Supernatural Wine Co. ‘Minus 220’ Sauvignon Blanc Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand ($39.99)
All of these are organic/natural etc.

(J Emerson reserves the right to make substitutions to any of the above wines)

How do I Register?
